Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. 2 Corinthians 5:17
The above verse of Scripture serves as a great description of the transformation that takes place in the heart of a man when he becomes a believer and Christ takes up residence in his heart.
Though the man, as far as can be seen physically is the same, spiritually he is now alive where he was once dead (2 Timothy 1:10). He now has been translated into another kingdom (Colossians 1:13).
Life changes when you truly come to Jesus! It is more than just a decision or a prayer that you pray. It is more than just a choice to become a member of some organization like a club or a team. It is far deeper than that. No, when a person truly accepts Christ and is born again he moves from death to life. He now possesses spiritual life that he has never known before.
Some interpret this verse to mean that the person who has been born again stops sinning. However, I don't think that is really what the emphasis is in this passage. I understand it to be much deeper than that. It teaches us much more. It actually reveals to us that a true Christian will be so impacted by Christ's taking up residence in his life that the resulting life that he will now live could be explained no other way than by the word NEW. His life is now new.
The old things that have been present in his life are passed away. Old things like the habits, the way of thinking, the manner of life, all those things that he has practiced all of his days in his lost condition are now gone. He is no longer the same person. In Christ he is a new creature. Jonathan Edwards the great preacher and theologian wrote, "When a man is enlightened savingly by Christ, he is, as it were, brought into a new world".
So what does all of this have to do with me? You might ask. Well the answer is found in the question, has your life been radically transformed by Christ? The goal is not that you be a church member, though the church is a gift for believers from God, it's not that you were baptized, though it is an ordinance of the church, it's not that you have a bible and read it, though the Bible is God's word for us. None of these things are the sign nor the requirements for true conversion.
New life in Christ is just that, new life. Have you become a possessor of this life? If not, we can help. Feel free to contact our ministry or if you are in the area please come by. We would love to share the way to this new life with you!
